ABS Training: Course Profiles
 

The ABS provides training on a range of topics to develop skills for high quality statistical collections and statistical analysis. If your training requirements are not met in the following list of courses please get in touch with the ABS Training Contact in your State/Territory. Please check these pages for updates, as we will be continuing to add new material.



Analysing Survey Data Made Simple
This two-day, computer-based course develops basic practical skills in statistical and graphical data analysis techniques using Microsoft Excel.

Basic Survey DesignThe aim of this course is to give a broad overview of all facets of survey development. The course covers developing survey objectives, advantages and disadvantages of various collection methodologies, questionnaire development, data processing and reporting of results.

Making Quality Informed Decisions
This course is intended to assist people to effectively use a quality framework to systematically understand quality issues associated with using data sources. It will also equip participants with the necessary skills to apply that understanding when making a decision (eg, on policy), and is designed to take participants through the key fundamentals of data quality assessment. There is also a strong emphasis on the importance of using good quality data to promote informed decision-making.

Valuing Australia's Environment


This course focuses on the emerging discipline of environmental accounting which strives to organise environmental statistics in a consistent and structured system and within a framework that allows integration of economic and environmental information.

Principles of Questionnaire DesignA well designed questionnaire is vital for collecting high quality data. The aim of this course is to provide participants with an awareness and understanding of questionnaire design principles. The course covers selecting collection methodologies, developing survey questions, designing questionnaire layout and testing the questionnaire.

Turning Data into InformationThis course develops skills in interpreting and analysing data and communicating information clearly and effectively. Analytical thinking skills are developed to enable the transformation of data into meaningful information such as written reports. A key theme of this course is analytical thinking to ensure relevant messages are extracted from data to meet set objectives.

Understanding Demographic DataThis course provides an understanding of the demographic data framework and the processes which shape the population and includes practical exercises in the analysis of demographic data.

ABS Datacubes in
SuperTABLE
The ABS web site has large datasets that can be downloaded for free. This course will teach participants how to access these datasets in SuperTABLE format to create tables that meet their organisation's information needs. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and computer-based exercises, participants will learn how to use the free SuperTABLE software.

Free Teacher Librarian Information SessionThis free, hands-on internet workshops will show you how to quickly access up-to-date information from the ABS website, for many subject areas and year levels. As well you'll discover the many online products and resources developed especially for teachers.

Introduction to Labour
Statistics
This course provides an overview of the range of concepts and issues associated with ABS labour statistics. It explores the data produced by both household and employer based collections, and highlights the range of products available to access labour-related data.
