UNDERSTANDING DEMOGRAPHIC DATA


ObjectivesTo develop participants' understanding of the demographic data framework and the processes which shape the population and will include practical exercises in the analysis of demographic data.
Who should attendPeople with an interest in Australia's changing population and society and those who want to use demographic data to inform debate, analysis and commentary on population issues.
Course benefitsIncreased understanding of:
    • how the ABS produces population estimates and projections and the relationship between this data and the Population Census;
    • the components of population growth - birth, deaths and migration;
    • the relevance of demographic data to social and economic issues, as well as tools for demographic analysis.

ANALYSING SURVEY DATA MADE SIMPLE


ObjectivesA computer-based course that aims to develop knowledge of descriptive statistics used when analysing data.
Who should attendPeople who want to increase their knowledge of basic statistical analysis.
Course benefitsIncreased understanding of:
    • univariate and bivariate analysis - mean, median, graph, distribution, histograms, variance/standard deviation, normal distributions;
    • survey sampling - weighting, estimation (including differences, movements and ratios), standard error, confidence intervals, significance testing.

MAKING QUALITY INFORMED DECISIONS

ObjectivesThe course introduces the concept of 'holistic quality' through the use of a data quality framework for a statistical collection. The framework ensures that users of statistics are able to assess whether the statistics are fit for their intended use.
Who should attendPeople who use statistics in decision-making and who want to understand how to evaluate the appropriateness of a particular statistical collection.

People who are involved in producing statistics and who want to ensure that these statistics are used appropriately.

    • how to set up a quality framework;
    • risk management in making statistical decisions;
    • how to assess datasets in context of data need; and

PRINCIPLES OF QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGN


ObjectivesTo provide participants with an awareness and understanding of questionnaire design principles. The course is run as a practical workshop.
Who should attendPeople who need to design and conduct a survey, and wish to gain an understanding of how to design a questionnaire that will collect information accurately and concisely.

    • ability to define the survey's objectives and use appropriate collection methods;
    • understanding of how to develop questionnaire content, with simple language and visual clarity;
    • understanding of how to develop instructions, coding, definitions and classifications to accompany questions;
